- Elliot kept these journals from the age of twenty-one until shortly before he was killed in Ecuador in January 1956; his widow Elisabeth edited them for publication. The line he is remembered by -- that a man is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose -- is an entry here rather than a saying from a sermon. This 2002 Revell paperback is the reissue. Journals rather than chapters: the book is arranged by date and has no table of contents.
