History

A brief history

Fleming H. Revell was twenty-one when he set up on Madison Street, Chicago, in 1870, taking over the paper Everybody's Paper from his brother-in-law, the evangelist D. L. Moody.1 The Great Chicago Fire destroyed the business in 1871 and he began again; within thirty years the firm was the largest American publisher of religious books, with offices in Chicago, New York, Toronto, London, and Edinburgh, and a list running from Spurgeon and Hannah Whitall Smith to Corrie ten Boom and Catherine Marshall.2 It is now an imprint of Baker Publishing Group and marked its 150th year in 2020.3
