Inter-Varsity Press

Inter-Varsity Press is the British house that grew out of the student Christian Union movement: the Inter-Varsity Fellowship of Evangelical Unions was formed in 1928 from the older Cambridge and Oxford Inter-Collegiate Christian Unions, and the press began as its publishing wing, later that of the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship.¹ Sources consulted disagree on which year to call its founding, giving 1928 for the Fellowship and 1944 for the press itself, so no founding date is recorded here. After a strategic review of UCCF in 2005 it was constituted as a separate Nottingham company and charity in its own right; in 2015, close to insolvency, it was taken over by SPCK and now operates as a subsidiary charity of that house while remaining a distinct entity bound to the UCCF doctrinal basis.¹ It is a different company from the American InterVarsity Press of Downers Grove (catalogued separately), which grew out of the parallel US fellowship and shares neither ownership nor list.² For this catalogue it matters chiefly through its academic imprint, Apollos, which co-publishes the Pillar New Testament Commentary with Eerdmans.
