The Confessions

Confessiones

Augustine of Hippo · Written 397–400 · Latin

Written in the years just after Augustine became bishop of Hippo, the Confessions recasts his own conversion as an extended prayer addressed to God — one of the first sustained works of autobiography in Western literature. This catalogue holds four separate English translations of it, the oldest reaching back to the Oxford Movement's 1838 edition.
