The City of God

Begun three years after Alaric's sack of Rome and finished thirteen years later, Augustine's longest work answers the pagan charge that Christianity had weakened the empire, then broadens into a sweeping contrast between the City of God and the City of Man across the whole of human history. It runs to twenty-two books, and this catalogue holds three of the English translations made of it, across six editions.
