Collected Works
The Works of John Owen, D.D.
One author — John Owen · est. 1826 · 21-volume set — the first attempt at a complete edition
Thomas Russell's edition for Richard Baynes — the first serious attempt to collect Owen's writings, a generation before Goold's more complete 1850s edition (catalogued separately) superseded it. A subscription printing (346 subscribers) opening with William Orme's 1820 life of Owen, reworked as the prefatory memoir in volume 1. Deliberately incomplete by design: Russell's own preface explains the Theologumena was omitted at subscribers' request, and the exercitation on "A Day of Sacred Rest" was left out because it already appeared in Dr. Wright's separately-published Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews (catalogued separately) — buyers of the era were expected to pair the two to get everything Owen wrote. Reprinted more than once before Goold's edition arrived; the specific set catalogued here is a later Victorian reprint by William Mackenzie (c. 1888) of this same Russell-edited text, not a fresh edition.
