InterVarsity's set of single-volume reference dictionaries, known among students simply as the black dictionaries, each covering one part of the canon in signed scholarly articles rather than short glossary entries. The New Testament volumes came first — Jesus and the Gospels, Paul and His Letters, the Later New Testament, New Testament Background — followed by four on the Old: the Pentateuch, the Historical Books, Wisdom, Poetry and Writings, and the Prophets.1 Each is edited by specialists in that part of the canon and written by a large international team, which is why the set is cited as scholarship rather than merely consulted as reference.
