Fathers of the Church: A New Translation
The Fathers, East and West · est. 1947 · 151 numbered volumes (1947– )
The Catholic University of America Press’s flagship patristic translation series, launched in 1947 under founding editorial director Ludwig Schopp with an initial plan of 72 volumes — a target passed decades ago; the series continues today. Numbering follows publication order, not chronology or author, so a single Church Father’s output is often spread across volumes issued years or decades apart (Augustine’s letters and Origen’s John commentary both run this way). Early volumes (through roughly the 1990s) were originally issued in cloth and have since been reset as a uniform paperback; from the 2000s on, new volumes appear in both cloth and paperback depending on the title, with a growing number ebook-only.
