History
A brief history
William Baynes (1760-1841) was a Methodist bookseller and printer who supplied books to most of the Methodist preachers in England for fifty years.1 His shop stood at 54 Paternoster Row from 1796, with a second address at number 23 through the 1820s, and the imprint alternated with the generations — William Baynes to 1820, William Baynes and Son from 1821 to 1828, plain William Baynes again to 1832, and William Baynes and Son once more from 1833 until his death.2 The stock was heavily theological: the firm's 1824-25 general catalogue offered a large collection of popular and scarce English divinity, manuscript sermons included.3 The six volumes catalogued here come from the 1820 edition of The Whole Works of John Flavel, issued jointly with Waugh and Innes of Edinburgh and M. Keene of Dublin.4 Late in the century Baynes was remembered as the last of Paternoster Row's old second-hand booksellers, a figure still in frills and gaiters.1 Richard Baynes, publisher of the 1826 Works of John Owen (catalogued separately), kept shop at number 28 in the same years; a family connection is plausible but no source consulted establishes it.
