History

A brief history

The University of Toronto Press was established in 1901, but for its first decade it was a printing plant rather than a publisher, turning out examination books and the university calendar; its first scholarly book, by a classicist at University College, appeared in 1911.1 It is now the oldest and largest university press in Canada and among the largest in North America, running publishing, distribution and retail divisions, with distribution operations in Toronto and Buffalo and four campus bookstores.1 Its reputation rests on long-horizon scholarly projects — the Dictionary of Canadian Biography among them.1 For this catalogue the relevant one is the Collected Works of Erasmus, begun in 1974, the first complete English Erasmus and still in progress; it is the largest single block of volumes catalogued here from any publisher.
