History

A brief history

SCM Press was founded in London in 1929 by the Baptist minister Hugh Martin, built out of the existing publications department of the Student Christian Movement and intended to supply students with theological literature cheaply.1 It became one of Britain's leading theological houses, publishing John A. T. Robinson's controversial Honest to God in 1963. Since 1997 it has been owned by Hymns Ancient and Modern.2
