Richard Baynes

Richard Baynes kept a bookshop at 28 Paternoster Row — the London street that was then the centre of the British book trade — and was working there through the 1820s.¹ In 1826 he undertook the first attempt at a complete edition of The Works of John Owen, a subscription printing that drew 346 subscribers and was distributed through a network of allied booksellers: J. Parker at Oxford, Deighton and Sons at Cambridge, and agents in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin.¹ Goold's Edinburgh edition superseded it within a generation, but the Baynes set is the ancestor of every collected Owen since.² A separate Paternoster Row house, W. Baynes and Son (catalogued here for its 1820 Flavel), traded a few doors away in the same years; a family connection is plausible, but no source consulted establishes it.
