A brief history
B. Howard Mudditt (1906-92), a Bank of England clerk, founded Paternoster Press in 1936, naming it for Paternoster Row, the London street of publishers — and, at a second remove, for the Lord's Prayer.1 It began with children's magazines and evangelical material, but Mudditt's connections through the Plymouth Brethren assembly he led at Walthamstow drew in a generation of scholars — F. F. Bruce above all, with H. L. Ellison, G. H. Lang and I. Howard Marshall — and the imprint became a byword for serious evangelical scholarship.1 It took over the Evangelical Quarterly in 1956, moved to Exeter in 1962, and co-published the New International Greek Testament Commentary with Eerdmans.1 Mudditt's son Jeremy became managing director in the mid-1970s; Send the Light bought the press in 1992 and folded it into Authentic Media at Milton Keynes, and after STL's collapse the Australian retailer Koorong acquired it in 2009. Authentic Media still publishes under the Paternoster name.1
