History

A brief history

Mercer University Press was founded in 1979 as the publishing arm of Mercer University at Macon, Georgia, and describes itself as the only Baptist-related institution to have sustained a continuous full-time publishing programme.¹ A staff of five issues 35 to 40 new titles a year, against more than 1,600 published since its founding.¹ Its series map two preoccupations: Baptist and religious studies on one hand — the James N. Griffith series, Baptist Identities, Early English Baptist Texts, and series devoted to Paul Tillich, Walter Rauschenbusch and Kierkegaard — and the American South on the other, with series on Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, and Southern food and music.¹ It received a Governor's Award for the Arts and Humanities in 2019.¹ Its block in this catalogue is the 24-volume International Kierkegaard Commentary, general-edited by Robert L. Perkins.
