History

A brief history

Established by Pope Pius XI in 1926, when the Vatican's bookshop was separated from its printing works and made an autonomous body charged with selling what the Holy See put into print.1 It publishes the church's official texts — papal bulls and encyclicals, the Annuario Pontificio, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which this catalogue holds in its first English edition. John Paul II's apostolic constitution Pastor Bonus of 1988 classified it as an institution attached to the Holy See.1 The 1994 English Catechism held here was distributed in the United States by Liguori Publications on the Vatican house's behalf.
