History

A brief history

John Henry Parker (1806–1884) took over his uncle Joseph Parker’s Oxford bookselling and publishing house in 1832 and made it the chief publisher of the Tractarian movement.¹ From 1838 he brought out the Library of the Fathers — the series of patristic translations edited by Pusey, Keble, and, until his conversion to Rome, Newman — together with the London house of Rivington.² An antiquary as well as a publisher, Parker wrote widely on Gothic architecture and later kept the photographic record of Rome. After his day the firm continued as James Parker & Co., which went on to co-publish the second series of Schaff’s Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, carrying the Oxford Movement’s patristic scholarship into the American set that revised it.
