History

A brief history

James Parker & Co. was the successor firm to John Henry Parker, the Oxford publisher of the Library of the Fathers — the Tractarian translation series begun by Pusey, Keble, and Newman in 1838.1 When Philip Schaff and Henry Wace brought out the second series of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers between 1890 and 1900, Parker issued it in Oxford alongside the Christian Literature Company in New York, and the title pages carry both imprints.2 That gave the American series a direct institutional line back to the Oxford Movement translations it revised.
