History

A brief history

James Nisbet began bookselling at 15 Castle Street, London, in 1809 at age twenty-four, moving to 21 Berners Street in 1824 and renaming the firm James Nisbet & Company around 1836.1 The house became known chiefly for religious texts, biographies, and children's books.1 It continued trading under the Nisbet name until 2008, when James Clarke & Co. acquired its publishing assets.1
