History
A brief history
James Nichol (1806-66) was born at Brechin and apprenticed to a bookseller in Montrose, went into business there with his stationer brother, then moved to Edinburgh and the house of John Johnstone — later Johnstone and Hunter, itself catalogued here — before setting up on his own account in 1850.1 Two series made his name. The Library Edition of the British Poets ran to 48 volumes from 1853, edited with lives and critical dissertations by George Gilfillan; and Nichol's Series of Standard Divines, Puritan Period, published between 1861 and 1875, returned the collected works of Thomas Goodwin, Richard Sibbes, Thomas Brooks and their contemporaries to print in uniform sets.1 He also published The Bulwark, the organ of the Scottish Reformation Society.1 Nichol died in 1866 and is buried in the Grange Cemetery, Edinburgh; his son John D. Nichol carried the business on, and the Standard Divines were still appearing a decade after his death.1 Most modern Puritan reprints of these authors trace back through his text.
