J. Ogle

The Ogles were a family of booksellers who dealt in divinity and traded in parallel in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London through the first decades of the 19th century — the London arm as Ogle, Duncan and Cochran of 295 High Holborn, whose catalogues advertised one of the largest theological stocks in the trade, and which trained the bibliographer James Darling between 1818 and 1825.¹ Their reprints kept a good deal of 17th-century Scottish and English divinity in circulation, including the 1810 Edinburgh edition of The Works of Robert Traill catalogued here, from which Banner of Truth's modern set descends.² Beyond the imprints themselves the house is poorly documented: no source consulted gives its founding date, the relationship between the Edinburgh, Glasgow and London branches, or the forename behind the "J. Ogle" of the Traill title page.
