History
A brief history
Founded in 1974 by Bob Hawkins Sr. at Irvine, California, with a first catalogue of five co-published titles.1 It moved to Eugene, Oregon, in 1981 and grew there into one of the larger American Christian trade houses; Bob Hawkins Jr. succeeded his father as president in 1991, and the firm is still independent and family-run.1 It issues something over a hundred and fifty new titles a year — Christian living, popular reference and fiction, with Kay Arthur, Elizabeth George and Stormie Omartian among its long-standing authors — and at its fiftieth anniversary in 2024 reported more than two hundred million books distributed in over seventy-five languages.23 This is a trade house rather than an academic one, which is why the single Harvest House title held here, Fitzpatrick, Newheiser and Hendrickson's When Good Kids Make Bad Choices, is a book for parents rather than for counsellors.
