History
A brief history
The firm began in New York in March 1817 as J. & J. Harper, founded by the brothers James and John Harper and renamed Harper & Brothers in 1833 once Wesley and Fletcher had joined them.1 It became Harper & Row in 1962 on merging with Row, Peterson of Evanston, Illinois; News Corporation bought it in 1987 and in 1990 combined it with its British counterpart William Collins, Sons — a Glasgow house founded in 1819 by the Presbyterian schoolmaster William Collins — to make HarperCollins.12 Its religious list runs through HarperOne, begun in 1977 as Harper San Francisco by thirteen Harper & Row employees who moved west, and renamed on its thirtieth birthday in 2007.3 Volumes in this catalogue therefore carry a Harper & Row or a HarperOne imprint depending only on when they were printed.
