History
A brief history
Fortress Press originated in the early 1960s as a Lutheran book imprint in Philadelphia; in 1988 it merged with the Augsburg Publishing House (founded 1891) to form Augsburg Fortress, the publishing ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.1 The parent organization was renamed 1517 Media in 2017, with Fortress Press continuing as its academic and trade theology imprint.2
