A brief history
Edward Payson Dutton opened a bookshop in Boston in 1852; he added a New York branch in 1864, moved his headquarters there in 1869, and began publishing as well as selling.1 E. P. Dutton had a long run as an independent trade house - it was, among much else, the American publisher of A. A. Milne - before Penguin bought it in 1986, and it survives as a Penguin Random House imprint.1 It is a general house rather than a religious one, which is the point of the single Dutton title held here: Timothy Keller's The Meaning of Marriage was written for a mainstream trade list and reached readers a Christian publisher would not have.
