History

A brief history

The Christian Literature Company began issuing the Ante-Nicene Fathers in 1885 — an American reorganization of T&T Clark's Ante-Nicene Christian Library made without authorization.1 United States law then gave foreign publications no copyright protection, so the Edinburgh translations could be reprinted freely; T&T Clark objected but had no legal recourse. The firm afterwards collaborated with Clark on the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (1886–1900), regularizing the relationship.2
