History
A brief history
The American Tract Society was formed in New York on 11 May 1825 by the merger of the New York Religious Tract Society (1812) with its New England counterpart (1814), with Elias Boudinot as first president and William Allen Hallock as secretary — a post he held until 1870.1 It was built for scale: 700,000 tracts in the first year and five million a year by 1850, aimed at immigrants, Native Americans and freed slaves, and distributed by a corps of travelling colporteurs who sold, counselled and held services as they went.1 In 1894 it put up the American Tract Society Building at 150 Nassau Street, for a moment among the tallest in New York.1 The society moved its headquarters to Garland, Texas in 1978 and still operates, working through print partners in some seventy countries and more than a hundred languages.1
