Clarendon Press

Named for Edward Hyde, first Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674), whose posthumous History of the Rebellion (1703-1707) was Oxford University Press's first bestseller; the University put a share of its profits into a new building for the Press, the Clarendon Building, and the name followed the printing there in 1713.¹ When OUP began publishing from London in the early twentieth century the label acquired a second use, distinguishing Oxford-printed books from London ones; today it is reserved for works of particular scholarly weight.²
