Notes
Hendrickson's 1997 reprint of a book first issued by Hodder & Stoughton in fascicles between 1914 and 1929 and gathered into one volume in 1930. Its full original title says what it does: The Vocabulary of the Greek Testament Illustrated from the Papyri and Other Non-Literary Sources. Working from the mass of Greek papyri, ostraca and inscriptions recovered from Egypt in the late nineteenth century, Moulton and Milligan showed word by word that the New Testament is written in the ordinary Greek of shopping lists, leases and private letters rather than in a dialect of its own — a finding that reshaped New Testament lexicography and is still the reason the book is consulted. Moulton died before it was done and Milligan finished it. The jacket of this reprint carries a papyrus fragment.
