- A university survey of American history written by six historians, and published by a religious house for a reason: its argument is that the American story cannot be told without the part religion played in it, alongside the social, political and economic factors a textbook usually confines itself to. Two of the six, Harrell and Gaustad, are historians of American religion by trade. The two volumes overlap deliberately — this one runs to 1900 and the second begins in 1865 — so that a one-semester course can use either.
