Notes: Nevin (1803-1886) was a Princeton graduate who taught at Mercersburg and wrote The Anxious Bench against revivalism and The Mystical Presence on the Lord's Supper. Hart reads him not as a liberalising figure but as the most acute nineteenth-century American critic of evangelical individualism from within the Reformed tradition.
